ICSI Râmnicu Vâlcea celebrates 50 years of nuclear research
The National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenic and Isotopic Technologies (ICSI) in Râmnicu Vâlcea celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of research in nuclear and isotopic technologies. The milestone event also honored the centenary of academician Marius Sabin Peculea, the founder of the institute and a key figure in Romania’s nuclear energy industry.
Fifty years ago, the institute achieved a significant scientific breakthrough by producing its first gram of nuclear-grade heavy water. This achievement established Râmnicu Vâlcea as a specialized technological hub and laid the foundation for a strategic national industry.
ICSI director Mihai Varlam noted that the institute has since evolved from a specialized heavy water facility into a complex research organization. Its current expertise includes cryogenics, hydrogen, energy storage, batteries, and advanced analysis. The institute is now preparing for a new stage of research into heavy water production technologies.
