ICTP to transform Adriatico Guesthouse into international scientific hub

The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region has committed 4.25 million euros to transform the Adriatico Guesthouse in Trieste into a multifunctional international scientific complex. The project, aimed at supporting the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), is scheduled for completion by 2029.

The initiative follows the acquisition of the historic building by the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, supported by Simons Foundation International (SFI). This acquisition is strategically significant because the ICTP’s international statutes prevent it from owning real estate. The foundation has secured the property's availability for the center's activities until 2056.

The redevelopment will turn the facility into a modern hub featuring classrooms, event spaces, and accommodation for the thousands of researchers and scientists who visit the ICTP annually. The project is supported by a 15 million USD donation from SFI and involves collaboration between regional authorities and international philanthropic foundations.
