Ida Auken named Denmark's church minister, vows equality and global outreach

Ida Auken has been appointed Denmark's new church minister, becoming the first minister since 2005 with a theological background. In her first public statements she emphasized the need for gender equality within the Folkekirken and pledged to confront religious discrimination against women.

Auken also highlighted the church's evolving role in society, calling for stronger international cooperation. The Folkekirkens Mellemkirkelige Råd announced plans to work with churches in Ukraine, support Christians in Israel/Palestine, and deepen ties with the church in Greenland. A pending issue on allowing double membership in the Folkekirken, driven by demographic changes and new immigrant Christian communities, is expected to be addressed under the new government.

The appointment signals a shift toward a more inclusive and globally engaged national church under Auken's leadership.
