Idaho faces high dropout rates and student food insecurity

Idaho faces significant challenges regarding its education system, including high dropout rates and student food insecurity. A study by WalletHub indicates that Idaho has the highest dropout rate in the United States and ranks last in educational spending. The study, which utilized 32 metrics, also placed the state low in educational quality and school safety, resulting in an overall ranking of 40th.

To address student needs, the Idaho Food Bank has launched its 2026 Back-to-School campaign. The initiative includes school pantries and backpack meal programs designed to combat childhood hunger. The Southeast Idaho branch partners with 78 local schools to provide nutritious, dietitian-curated meals to elementary students. The program relies heavily on community support, with 95% of funding coming from private individuals and organizations to purchase food for the backpacks.
