Idaho Supreme Court approves revised Proposition 1 text

The Idaho Supreme Court has approved revised text for Proposition 1, a ballot initiative focused on reproductive rights and personal healthcare decisions. The court's unanimous decision followed a lawsuit by Idahoans United for Women and Families, which argued that the original wording for the “yes” and “no” options was biased and potentially misleading to voters.

The revised “yes” statement supports creating a right to abortion before fetal viability—defined as the ability of a fetus to survive without extraordinary medical measures—and after viability in medical emergencies, while providing protections for healthcare providers. The revised “no” statement supports maintaining current Idaho laws, which prohibit abortion except to prevent the death of the pregnant woman or in documented cases of rape or incest during the first trimester.

Simultaneously, an interfaith coalition known as “Stop Prop 1” has formed to oppose the measure. This group, which includes leaders from the Catholic Diocese, evangelical communities, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has raised $3 million for an opposition campaign. Opponents argue the initiative uses “clever words” to mask its impact, claiming it would nullify existing parental rights and notification laws regarding fetal viability.
