Idaho university murders documentary renews focus on 2022 killings

In November 2022, four University of Idaho students—Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen—were stabbed to death in a rental house near the Moscow campus. Graduate student Bryan Kohberger was arrested, pleaded guilty in 2025 to avoid the death penalty, and received four life‑sentence terms.

Netflix released a three‑part true‑crime docuseries titled *The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare* (also known as *Los asesinatos de Idaho: Pesadilla en la universidad*) on 29 July 2026. Directed by Skye Borgman and produced by Joe Berlinger, the series uses police body‑camera footage, forensic evidence and interviews with victims’ families to center the narrative on the four slain students rather than the perpetrator. The series quickly became one of Netflix’s most‑watched titles worldwide, sparking renewed public interest.

Following the series’ debut, Kohberger filed a petition to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming coercion and seeking a new trial. A court‑appointed lawyer is now reviewing the request, raising the possibility of a retrial and renewed debate over the death‑penalty option. The documentary also prompted online discussion, with a Reddit user highlighting eight unanswered questions about the investigation, such as the role of a white Hyundai seen in surveillance footage.
