Brazil targets critical minerals leadership with new IDB-backed financing

Brazil is positioning itself as a major player in the global critical minerals market, holding the world's second-largest reserve of rare earths (approximately 21 million tons of oxides) and 98% of the world's niobium. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has identified between 15 and 20 projects in Brazil with the potential for financing, part of a broader Latin American pipeline estimated at up to US$ 12 billion.

To support economic and ecological transitions, the Brazilian Senate has approved several major financing measures. This includes US$ 67 million for renewable energy projects in the Northeast, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo, and US$ 100 million from the IDB to improve the national business environment and reduce regulatory costs. Additionally, the Economic Affairs Commission authorized up to US$ 1 billion for the Eco Invest Brasil program to mobilize green investments.

Experts suggest that expanding the critical minerals supply chain could add R$ 192.1 billion to Brazil's GDP and create 750,000 jobs by 2050. However, challenges remain, including the need for domestic industrialization to move beyond raw material exports and the requirement for highly skilled labor to manage emerging technologies.
