Idea Vilariño: The influential Uruguayan poet of the Generación del 45

Idea Vilariño was a prominent Uruguayan poet, essayist, teacher, translator, and literary critic, recognized as a fundamental figure of the ‘Generación del 45’. Born in Montevideo on August 18, 1920, her work is characterized by its profound exploration of love, loss, and the fleeting nature of existence, often using precise and stripped-down language to express pain.

Her early life was marked by personal tragedy, including the early deaths of her parents and her brother, Azul, as well as chronic health issues. These experiences deeply influenced her literary perspective. Vilariño published her first book, ‘La suplicante’, in 1945. She played a key role in the literary scene through her involvement with the historical magazine ‘Clinamen’ in 1947, alongside figures such as Ángel Rama and Ida Vitale. She also contributed to the weekly ‘Marcha’ and helped found the prestigious magazine ‘Número’.
