Identical quadruplets born in Medellín, Colombia
A couple from Caucasia, Antioquia, has welcomed the birth of identical quadruplets at the Clínica del Prado in Medellín. The infants, named Mariano, Maximiliano, Emiliano, and Thiago, were born after 34 weeks of gestation.
The birth is considered a rare medical phenomenon, as the babies are believed to be monocigotic, meaning they developed from a single fertilized egg that divided into four embryos. This occurrence is estimated to happen in only one out of every 10 to 15 million pregnancies. During the gestation, the four babies shared a single placenta, a condition requiring intensive medical monitoring.
Medical teams from Savia Salud EPS and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit coordinated the delivery. Although a cesarean section was initially planned for a later date, the mother, Kettis María Tapia, entered labor earlier than expected. The newborns are currently stable and receiving specialized care in the neonatal unit due to their premature birth, while the mother remains in recovery.
