IDF marks Palestinian detainees with numbers during West Bank raid

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) admitted to marking Palestinian detainees with identification numbers written on their foreheads and bodies during a military operation in the West Bank village of Qabatiyah, south of Jenin.

The operation, described as an anti-terrorism mission, involved raids on approximately 100 buildings and resulted in the arrest of two suspects believed to be involved in planning attacks. However, local Palestinian sources reported a higher number of arrests and alleged that some detainees were beaten by Israeli forces.

One resident, Ahmed Al-Hatnawi, confirmed he was assigned the number 44, stating he was treated in a way that felt dehumanizing. The IDF stated that commanders have addressed the gravity of the incident and that the troops involved have learned a lesson regarding the practice.

Human rights activists noted that this is not an isolated incident; a similar practice of marking detainees' hands was reported in April, and the military had previously issued orders to end the practice of marking bodies with numbers in 2009.
