IDF marks Palestinian detainees with numbers during West Bank raid
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) admitted to marking Palestinian detainees with identification numbers written on their skin during a military operation in the village of Qabatiyah, located south of Jenin in the West Bank. The raid, which involved searching approximately 100 buildings, resulted in the arrest of two suspects believed to be involved in planning attacks.
Videos and photos circulating on social media, including an image of a man with the number ‘44’ on his forehead, sparked widespread condemnation. Palestinian resident Ahmed Al-Hatnawi reported being marked on both his forehead and arm, stating he felt treated “like animals or beasts” to induce humiliation. Israeli lawmaker Ahmad Tibi described the practice as “shocking and repugnant,” characterizing it as a form of dehumanization.
The IDF stated that the numbers were used to identify suspects during interrogations. Military commanders have reportedly addressed the gravity of the incident, stating that the troops have learned a lesson from the event. However, human rights activist Ihab Hassan noted that the Israeli military had previously ordered an end to the practice of marking detainees with numbers in 2009.
