Fire and explosion at Bratislava's Slovnaft refinery send black smoke over city
On Friday afternoon a storage tank at the Slovnaft oil refinery in Bratislava ruptured, igniting a fire and causing an explosion. The blast produced a dense black plume that drifted over the capital and was visible as far as Austria. No injuries were reported and the refinery’s spokesperson said there was no immediate danger to nearby residents. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after several hours, and production at the plant was temporarily halted. Local authorities in Bratislava‑Ružinov and nearby municipalities advised people to stay indoors, close windows and avoid outdoor exposure. The incident was also reported in Hungary (Pozsony) and Poland, confirming the widespread visibility of the smoke.
