IDOS Dossier 2026: Migration provides 4.8 billion euro net gain to Italy

The 2026 IDOS Statistical Migration Dossier reveals that immigrants provided a net gain of 4.8 billion euros to the Italian treasury. The report highlights a significant disconnect between political rhetoric regarding migration emergencies and the actual demographic and economic reality of the country.

Italy is facing a severe demographic decline, recording its sixth worst birth rate since 1870 in 2025. The national demographic balance shows a net loss of 385,000 people annually, compounded by the emigration of approximately 109,000 citizens, many of whom are highly educated young adults.

As of late 2025, approximately 5.56 million foreign residents lived in Italy, representing 9.4 percent of the population. Data shows that sea arrivals in 2025 totaled 66,296, a figure similar to the previous year. Furthermore, the report notes that more than 6.6 million Italians are registered as residents abroad, a figure that exceeds the number of foreigners living in Italy.
