Iğdır implements shade and water stations for livestock
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched an initiative in Iğdır, Turkey, to support the region's approximately 1.4 million small ruminants. To combat summer temperatures that can reach 40 degrees Celsius, officials have installed shade structures and water troughs in mountainous pastures.
Over the last five years, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has completed 92 shade structures and 650 water troughs. These rest points are designed to prevent livestock from weakening due to the long distances, sometimes up to 12 kilometers, previously required to find water and shade.
Provincial Director Ahmet Tingiş stated that these infrastructure improvements are expected to increase meat and milk production by 30 percent. The project specifically targets mountain villages in the Tuzluca district and surrounding areas, with plans to expand infrastructure to more remote villages by 2027.
