Idris Elba survival thriller Above the Below set for December 2026 release

Lionsgate has released the first trailer and official poster for the upcoming survival thriller ‘Above the Below’, starring and co-directed by Idris Elba. The film, which Elba co-directs with Martin Owen, follows three astronauts who survive a catastrophic re-entry to Earth only to find their capsule sinking into the ocean.

As oxygen levels deplete and contact with mission control is lost, the crew must face life-or-death decisions to reach the surface. The film stars Elba as mission commander Jackson, alongside Caitlin FitzGerald as pilot Brookes and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Rhodes.

Production took place at Pinewood Studios, utilizing its underwater stage, with filming completed in early 2024. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 4, 2026, though STUDIOCANAL will release it in Australian cinemas slightly earlier on December 3, 2026.
