Iğdır's Karabatak Necklace Celebrated as Living Cultural Heritage

The Karabatak necklace, a traditional gold pendant unique to Iğdır in eastern Turkey, symbolizes resilience, hope and the struggle for a better future. Historically mothers have placed the necklace around their daughters' necks at weddings, offering the advice, "Be strong, never give up, keep your hope alive." Its design features black beads representing Turkish women's strength, a crescent for protection, and stars for hope, with floral motifs that signify fertile soil.

Jeweler Murat Aras explains that centuries‑old examples were crafted in 14‑22 carat gold by hand, and that the design has been revised many times while retaining its cultural meaning. The necklace is sold only in Iğdır and is now experiencing a revival, becoming a popular gift for newlyweds and young couples and turning into a modern trend while still being regarded as an important piece of regional heritage.
