Idu train station fire contained after electrical fault in Abuja

A fire broke out at the Idu train station in Abuja, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), on Wednesday evening around 8:30 p.m. The incident originated from an electrical fault in the facility’s low-voltage room.

Maintenance personnel contained the fire before it could cause major damage. Preliminary inspections revealed that several electrical supply cables connected to control panels were damaged. However, the station’s alternative solar power system remained unaffected.

According to NRC Chief Public Relations Officer Callistus Unyimadu, temporary power has been restored to most station facilities, with five of the six lifts and escalators currently operational. The Abuja-Kaduna Train Service was not disrupted, and scheduled operations are proceeding as planned. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has been notified to provide technical support as teams continue to assess the fault for permanent restoration.
