Turkey unveils National Energy 2040 vision and COP31 preparations

Turkey is advancing its energy and climate transition strategies ahead of hosting the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya from November 9 to 20, 2026. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the 'National Energy 2040' vision will be officially launched in Istanbul on November 5. This plan includes a projected $100 billion investment in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure to meet rising demand from electric vehicles, industrial electrification, and data centers.

In the hydrogen sector, Turkey aims to increase its electrolyzer capacity to 2 GW by 2030, 5 GW by 2035, and 70 GW by 2053. Additionally, the country is promoting the '35 in 35' initiative, which seeks to increase electricity's share of global energy consumption to 35% by 2035.

Preparations for COP31 are also underway, with the conference structured around 12 thematic days covering topics such as food, energy, and resilient cities. Local governments, including representatives from Gaziantep and Izmir, have held policy dialogues to integrate local climate actions into the global summit. The event is expected to provide a significant economic boost to Antalya, estimated at $2 billion to $4 billion.
