IEA: Global renewable energy capacity to grow by 4,800 GW through 2031

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that global renewable energy capacity will expand by approximately 4,800 gigawatts (GW) between 2026 and 2031. This represents a nearly 60 percent increase compared to the previous six-year period. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is expected to drive more than 75 percent of this growth, followed by onshore wind.

Energy security is cited as a primary driver for this expansion, as nations seek to reduce reliance on imported fuels following market disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East. For the first time, emerging and developing economies outside of China are forecast to add as much renewable capacity as advanced economies during this period, with both groups expected to add roughly 1,100 GW.

China is projected to remain the largest contributor to global capacity growth, adding approximately 2,550 GW, though its overall share of global additions is expected to decline from over 60 percent in 2025 to an average of 53 percent during the forecast period. India is identified as the world's second-largest growth market, with its total renewable capacity expected to more than double by 2031.
