IEA PVPS reports gaps in BIPV performance simulation and benefits of vertical façades
A new report from IEA PVPS reveals that existing simulation tools struggle to accurately predict the short-term power performance and module temperatures of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). While current models provide reasonably accurate estimates for long-term electricity generation, they show significant deviations in short-term predictions. The study analyzed six installations across various climates, including sites in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Spain, South Korea, and China.
Complementary research from IEA PVPS Task 15 suggests that vertical BIPV façades can effectively complement rooftop solar systems. The study, which tested 357 configurations across 44 cities, indicates that vertical systems can smooth energy generation throughout the day with minimal yield penalties. Furthermore, the economic viability of BIPV improves when accounting for the avoided costs of traditional building materials.
