IEBC rejects claims that deceased voters could participate in 2027 election

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has responded to controversial remarks made by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar regarding the 2027 General Election. During a political gathering in Mombasa, Omar claimed that deceased individuals could be mobilized to vote for President William Ruto by using their fingerprints before burial.

IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana dismissed these claims, stating that the commission’s biometric systems, which utilize fingerprint and iris recognition, require living subjects to function. Mukhwana warned politicians against making reckless statements that erode public trust in the electoral process.

Government Spokesperson Charles Owino also called for the IEBC to take stern action against Omar, describing the comments as careless and a threat to political stability. The remarks come amid heightened political activity and ongoing debates regarding voter registration and the security of the electoral system ahead of the August 2027 polls.
