IEBC rejects corruption allegations made by Rigathi Gachagua

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed allegations of corruption and political interference regarding preparations for Kenya’s 2027 General Election. The commission responded to claims made by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who suggested that politicians had purchased a house for IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon to influence electoral outcomes.

IEBC Chairperson Ethekon characterized the claims as unsubstantiated and a smear campaign intended to undermine public confidence. The commission noted discrepancies in the alleged value of the property, which reportedly shifted from Sh80 million to Sh200 million.

In a demand for accountability, the IEBC challenged Gachagua to provide specific evidence, including the property’s location, sale and transfer agreements, and payment receipts. The commission stated that such evidence should be submitted to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for investigation. The IEBC further maintained that its current composition is lawful and has been validated by judicial scrutiny.
