Guayaquil and Veracruz face severe flooding and class suspensions

Severe weather events are causing widespread disruption across Ecuador and Mexico. In Ecuador, intense rainfall linked to El Niño and high tides has triggered significant flooding, particularly in Guayaquil, where 170.37 mm of rain fell by the morning of October 19. The flooding has affected 57 urban sectors, caused sinkholes, and knocked down trees. Consequently, the Ministry of Education suspended in-person classes in zones 5 and 8, including Guayaquil and Samborondón, though some areas like Balao, Milagro, and Tenguel remain under monitoring. Nationwide, over 5,511 homes have been impacted by heavy rains.

In Mexico, a cold front has brought heavy rains and strong winds to the state of Veracruz. Authorities have suspended classes in 28 municipalities in the southern region to ensure the safety of students and staff. Emergency teams are monitoring river levels and providing aid to affected families, while the resumption of school activities remains contingent on meteorological improvements and safety inspections of school facilities.
