Çiçek Pasajı advertising signage sparks historical preservation debate

The use of colorful advertising posters and signage by a dessert shop located at the entrance of the historic Çiçek Pasajı in Istanbul has sparked significant debate regarding the preservation of historical architecture.

Built in 1876, the 19th-century structure in Beyoğlu is a significant cultural landmark that has been frequented by prominent Turkish literary figures. Critics and historians argue that the modern, brightly colored advertisements obstruct the building's ornate stone facade, carvings, and architectural details.

Historian İlknur Bektaş emphasized the need for preservation, stating, “You cannot use historical structures as ordinary advertising surfaces.” Other observers noted that such advertisements are inconsistent with the historical character of Istiklal Avenue and could negatively impact the area's aesthetic and touristic value.
