IELKA reports slight decrease in Greek supermarket prices for August 2026

According to research by the Institute for Economic Research of Consumer Goods (IELKA), supermarket prices in Greece saw a marginal decrease of 0.15% in August 2026 compared to August 2025. While the monthly index showed a slight increase of 0.28% compared to July 2026, the summer quarter (June-August) recorded a minor decrease of 0.08%.

Among the 23 categories analyzed, 10 experienced price drops and 13 saw increases. The most significant decreases were found in fresh fruits and vegetables (-7.60%), pet food and supplies (-2.32%), fresh and frozen doughs (-1.93%), alcoholic beverages (-1.63%), and fresh fish and seafood (-1.07%). IELKA attributes the drop in fresh produce to favorable weather conditions and the stabilization of meat prices to normalized producer and import costs.

Conversely, the largest price hikes occurred in snacks, appetizers, and served items (+3.42%), deli meats (+3.06%), biscuits and chocolates (+2.63%), nuts (+2.62%), and water, soft drinks, and juices (+2.55%). IELKA notes that inflation stabilization in large food retailers is driven by economies of scale, high inventory turnover, and the influence of private label products.
