IELTS: Vietnam considers admission policy changes and new testing formats

Vietnam is considering a proposal to remove IELTS certificate bonus points from university admissions starting in 2027. Currently, many universities use IELTS scores to add extra points or convert them into English subject grades. At the University of Economics and Law (VNU-HCM), IELTS scores can add between 2 and 5 points to a candidate's total score, creating a significant gap between students with and without certificates despite similar academic performance.

To adapt to potential policy changes, educators suggest transitioning from adding bonus points to converting IELTS scores directly into English language grades within the admission combination. This would recognize English proficiency without creating an artificial point advantage.

In related testing developments, IDP Vietnam and the British Council have announced that starting October 2026, IELTS candidates taking the computer-delivered test will have the option to complete the Writing section on paper. While Listening and Reading will remain on computers, this hybrid format allows students to choose the writing method that best suits their preference. The structure, content, and scoring criteria remain unchanged.
