IEPC faces complaints over campaign delays and gender parity mandates
The Instituto de Elecciones y Participación Ciudadana (IEPC) is facing scrutiny regarding its handling of electoral regulations and gender parity mandates in Mexico.
In Chiapas, the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) has accused the IEPC of delays in addressing complaints concerning premature campaign promotion and personalized propaganda. PAN representative Ruperto Hernández Pereyra noted that while approximately 40 percent of the 15 complaints filed have been resolved, many decisions are currently being contested in the State Electoral Tribunal. The party argues that response times of 25 to 30 days for precautionary measures allow unauthorized political advertising to remain visible for months.
In Guerrero, the IEPC has implemented guidelines requiring political parties to nominate exclusively women for mayoral positions in 18 specific municipalities for the upcoming elections. While major parties including Morena, PRI, and PAN have challenged these mandates in court, Deputy Araceli Ocampo Manzanares of Morena has publicly supported the decision, stating it is necessary to expand opportunities for women in regions where they have not previously held leadership roles.
