Mexican electoral institutes manage transitions and security for upcoming cycles

In Tabasco, Jorge Alberto Zavala Frías has resigned from his position as Executive Secretary of the Instituto Electoral y de Participación Ciudadana (IEPCT). His resignation follows controversy regarding the sharing of a promotional video for Daniel Casasús Ruz, a Morena candidate for mayor of Centro, on WhatsApp. Four electoral counselors formally requested his removal, citing violations of impartiality, independence, and objectivity. The IEPCT is now preparing to approve the 2026-2027 electoral calendar, which will establish key dates for precampaigns and official voting.

In the State of Mexico, the Instituto Electoral del Estado de México (IEEM) is preparing for the 2027 elections. The institute aims to recycle over 50% of electoral materials, such as ballot boxes and partitions, to generate savings. Additionally, authorities are addressing security concerns following 32 recorded incidents of violence against candidates during the 2024 cycle, including threats and attacks, as they work to establish new protection protocols for the upcoming process.
