Achillopouleio Hospital in Volos under investigation after surgical tool left in patient

An elderly woman at the Achillopouleio General Hospital in Volos underwent a second surgery to remove a large surgical instrument that was left inside her abdomen following an abdominal procedure in the summer.

The error was not detected during the initial surgery, and the patient began experiencing intense, persistent pain during her recovery. Subsequent diagnostic imaging revealed the presence of the instrument. Following the successful removal of the object, the patient recovered relatively quickly. Although the patient reportedly stated she does not wish to pursue legal action against the medical staff or the hospital, the administration has launched a formal investigation.

A Sworn Administrative Inquiry (EDE) was ordered to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify potential professional liability. Following the initial inquiry, the hospital director ordered a supplementary investigation to examine the possible responsibility of multiple individuals. The investigation is specifically focusing on whether strict protocols for the counting and inspection of surgical equipment before and after procedures were followed.
