Iernut power plant nearing completion to boost Romania's energy grid
The Iernut gas-fired power plant in Romania is nearing completion, with Romgaz aiming to bring the facility into operation by the end of this year. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that the plant is expected to undergo testing during the winter and reach full operational capacity in the first quarter of next year.
The project, which began in 2016, has faced significant delays of approximately seven years due to management issues, the pandemic, and the bankruptcy of the original Spanish general contractor, Duro Felguera. Romgaz took over direct administration of the project after it reached roughly 90% completion. Currently, the project is reported to be at a 98% completion stage.
Once operational, the plant will add 430 MW of capacity to the national energy system. This is intended to address production deficits in central and western Romania while reducing pressure on the Transelectrica transport networks by balancing the surplus in the southeast. Romgaz CEO Răzvan Popescu stated that the goal is to synchronize the plant with the national grid as soon as possible to ensure economic recovery of the investment.
