IES La Patacona opens in Alboraya amid protests over unfinished facilities
The new IES La Patacona secondary school in Alboraya, Valencia, has opened for the 2026-27 academic year amid protests from teachers and families due to significant infrastructure deficiencies. Although the move marks the end of 15 years of students using temporary barracks, the new building remains incomplete.
Reports indicate that approximately 700 students began classes in a facility lacking essential services, including internet connectivity, telephone lines, air conditioning, and digital whiteboards. The building is reportedly still under construction, with some areas utilizing temporary construction lighting and laboratories lacking necessary equipment.
In response to the lack of cleanliness and readiness, parents and faculty members organized voluntary cleaning shifts to prepare classrooms and desks. Teachers have also reported having to transport furniture and shelving from previous locations using private vehicles to ensure basic functionality for the start of the term.
