IESE Business School launches Oftimum to improve eye disease care
IESE Business School has introduced Oftimum, a strategic initiative designed to transform the care of five ophthalmological diseases that can cause irreversible vision loss. Sponsored by AbbVie, the project was developed alongside a scientific committee including healthcare specialists, managers, and patient representatives.
The initiative outlines eight dimensions, 22 goals, and 12 priority interventions to improve the management of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusion. The framework includes indicators and an adaptable roadmap for hospitals and autonomous communities, aiming for earlier, more coordinated care focused on patient health outcomes.
Key proposals include defining common screening and diagnosis criteria, integrating electronic health records, and utilizing teleophthalmology for remote assessment. These measures aim to address obstacles such as late diagnosis, waiting lists, and lack of coordination. In Spain, it is estimated that eight million people could face serious vision problems by 2030.
