Peru prepares for 2026 regional and municipal elections

Peru is intensifying preparations for the 2026 regional and municipal elections. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has conducted official simulations of its Electoral Computing System to verify software functionality and data transmission security across 125 decentralized offices. Additionally, ONPE has begun training sessions for polling station members in thousands of locations nationwide.

To ensure order, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) will enforce several restrictions. A ban on publishing opinion polls began on September 28, and political propaganda will be suspended starting October 3. A 'dry law' prohibiting alcohol sales will be in effect from 8:00 a.m. on October 3 until 8:00 a.m. on October 5. Voting hours are set from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on election day, October 4.

The Ministerio Público is deploying over 6,000 prosecutors to monitor the process and prevent electoral crimes such as identity theft, vote buying, and corruption. Meanwhile, legal experts have raised concerns regarding candidates attempting to circumvent reelection restrictions by running for first councilor positions.
