IETAM reserves electoral council seats for priority groups

The Electoral Institute of Tamaulipas (IETAM) is implementing affirmative action measures to reserve seats for priority groups within its district and municipal electoral councils. For the first time, these councils will include representation for youth, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and the sexual diversity community.

Electoral counselor Mayra Lugo Rodríguez stated that one seat in each of the 65 planned councils—comprising 35 municipal and 22 district bodies—will be reserved for these groups. Approximately 400 individuals have registered under these affirmative action measures out of a total of 1,477 qualified applicants.

Selected candidates must pass an examination and an interview process to ensure high-quality profiles for the electoral organs. The installation of these councils is scheduled for the first week of February next year. Additionally, women represent 54 percent of the current applicants, supporting efforts toward gender parity in the organization.
