IF Metall ends three-year strike against Tesla in Sweden

The long-running labor dispute between the Swedish union IF Metall and Tesla has reached a conclusion. On August 13, 2026, after nearly three years of conflict, IF Metall announced it would end its industrial actions against the automaker, with measures set to cease on August 19.

A primary factor in the resolution was Tesla’s decision to buy out all remaining striking IF Metall members within its Swedish operations. This move effectively neutralized the strike's momentum.

Labor activists and union veterans have expressed concern over the outcome. KG Wanngård, a veteran union activist, emphasized the need for sharper analysis and more courage within the labor movement following the strike's end. The conflict highlighted the complexities of modern industrial relations, specifically the distinction between institutional solidarity managed by centralized unions and self-organized solidarity among workers across different sectors.
