If warns of winter damage risks for Swedish vacation homes

Insurance company If is warning vacation home owners in Sweden against turning off heating systems during the winter to save on electricity costs. High energy prices, driven by market developments and weather conditions, may lead owners to lower temperatures significantly, increasing the risk of frozen pipes and subsequent water damage.

Sara Aschan, damage manager at If, recommends maintaining a base temperature of approximately 15–16 degrees Celsius to ensure heat reaches areas with water pipes. Even if heating is maintained, it is advised to shut off the water at the main valve to prevent damage in the event of a power outage during extreme cold. Additionally, owners are encouraged to have someone check on vacant properties during particularly cold periods.
