IFA Shield 2026 fixtures announced with new foreign player rule
The Indian Football Association (IFA) has announced the fixtures for the IFA Shield 2026-27. Defending champions Mohun Bagan are scheduled to begin their campaign against Sreenidi Deccan on September 23, while rivals East Bengal will face Punjab FC on September 24.
This year’s tournament features a new rule allowing teams to field up to six foreign players in their starting XI. This provides coaches for major clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal an opportunity to evaluate new overseas signings ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) season, which begins on October 10.
Mohammedan Sporting has withdrawn from the competition in protest against refereeing decisions during a recent Calcutta Football League match. Calcutta Customs has been named as their replacement. The tournament will also feature debutants NorthEast United FC and Punjab FC. Due to India’s upcoming international friendly matches against teams such as Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay, several national team players may be unavailable for the participating clubs.
