IFAB clarifies VAR identity‑swap rule after Embolo red card at World Cup

The European football governing body UEFA gathered refereeing officials from all 55 national associations and representatives of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to reaffirm that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system should intervene only in cases of "clear and obvious" errors. UEFA emphasized that VAR is a support tool and not a means to re‑judge incidents in detail.

IFAB later clarified that the new identity‑swap protocol was misapplied at the recent World Cup quarter‑final between Argentina and Switzerland. The protocol, intended to correct a wrong player receiving a card, should not be used to punish simulation after the fact. As a result, Swiss striker Breel Embolo’s second yellow card – given for alleged simulation – was overturned, and the red card was rescinded, while Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes retained his yellow.

The clarification follows criticism from Swiss coach Murat Yakin and other observers who argued the decision unfairly affected the match outcome. UEFA and IFAB said the updated guidance will promote consistent VAR usage in future competitions.
