IFPI establishes new guidelines for AI‑generated music on official charts
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced a framework to separate human‑created recordings from those produced with generative AI. To qualify for inclusion in official charts, an AI‑assisted track must use an authorised AI service, be substantially created by humans, and show no evidence of streaming or chart manipulation. The guidelines were developed with major labels Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group and will initially apply to IFPI‑managed charts in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, with plans to extend to more than 20 additional chart organisations worldwide. IFPI chief executive Victoria Oakley said the rules protect the “human artistry at the heart of music” while allowing responsible AI use. The move responds to concerns that some AI systems have been trained on copyrighted recordings without permission and aims to safeguard creators’ rights.
