Iga Swiatek defends Wimbledon title with win over Taylor Townsend

Polish world No. 1 Iga Swiatek defended her Wimbledon title by defeating American Taylor Townsend in the first round of the tournament. Swiatek took the opening set 6‑1, lost the second 2‑6, and secured the match with a 6‑3 win in the third set, in a contest that lasted more than two hours. The victory advances the defending champion to a second‑round clash with Czech player Karolina Pliskova.

Swiatek recorded nine double faults compared with Townsend’s two and held a slight edge in winners (25‑21) while committing more unforced errors (36‑23). Her resilient play, including a record‑long game in the third set, demonstrated the champion’s mental toughness on Centre Court.
