Iga Swiatek discusses WTA ranking battle in Beijing
Iga Swiatek has commented on Aryna Sabalenka’s drive to reclaim the WTA world number 1 ranking. Swiatek noted the psychological difference between defending the top spot and chasing it, stating, “I understand Aryna, because when you are number one, you feel that everyone has a target on your back.”
The current WTA rankings have seen significant shifts this season. Elena Rybakina ascended to the number 1 position following her US Open victory, but she suffered an early exit at the China Open in Beijing, losing her opening match to Alina Charaeva (3-6, 6-4, 6-3).
Aryna Sabalenka, who previously held the number 1 ranking for 99 consecutive weeks, is currently ranked number 2 and has qualified for the WTA Finals for the sixth consecutive year. Meanwhile, Swiatek, who held the top ranking for a 75-week period between late 2023 and late 2024, is currently ranked number 10 and is competing in Beijing to earn points for the WTA Race.
Swiatek opened her campaign at the China Open with a victory over Gao Xinyu, winning 6-2, 6-3.
