Elise Mertens reaches China Open semifinals after defeating Iga Swiatek

Elise Mertens has advanced to the China Open semifinals in Beijing after defeating eighth seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-6 (0), 6-3. The victory marks Mertens' first win over Swiatek in three career meetings and her third consecutive win over a Grand Slam champion in this tournament, following victories over Coco Gauff and Jelena Ostapenko.

Mertens demonstrated high efficiency, winning 87 percent of her first-serve points and recording 24 winners. Swiatek struggled with consistency, committing 34 unforced errors during the match. The first set was decided by a dominant 7-0 tiebreak for the Belgian.

In the other quarterfinal, China’s Qinwen Zheng secured her place in the semifinals by defeating Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 (6). Zheng, who has been working to rebuild her ranking after dropping to number 160 earlier this year, will face Mertens in the next round.
