Beijing WTA 1000 tournament begins with player withdrawals and qualifying results
The WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing has commenced, marked by significant player movements and tournament withdrawals. High-profile players including Jessica Pegula, Marta Kostyuk, and Amanda Anisimova have withdrawn due to injury or scheduling, highlighting concerns regarding the density of the WTA calendar.
Polish tennis saw notable activity in the tournament. Katarzyna Kawa successfully navigated the qualifying rounds, defeating Rinko Matsuda and Valeria Savinykh to secure a spot in the main draw. Other Polish players, including Iga Świątek, Maja Chwalińska, Magda Linette, and Magdalena Fręch, are also participating. Świątek, currently a second alternate for the WTA Finals, is aiming for a deep run in Beijing to improve her year-end standings. During training, Świątek was observed receiving technical advice from Novak Djoković.
In the qualifying rounds, Slovenian player Tamara Zidanšek was eliminated by Ksenia Zaytseva, and Nika Radišić also exited the competition in China. The tournament serves as a critical component of the intense Asian autumn swing, which includes stops in Wuhan and Guangzhou before the season-ending WTA Finals.
