Iga Swiatek and Maja Chwalinska set for all-Polish Wuhan Open semifinal
Iga Swiatek and Maja Chwalinska will face each other in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open, marking a historic moment for Polish tennis. Swiatek, the world number nine, secured her place in the final four by defeating American Ann Li 6-4, 6-1. With this victory, Swiatek becomes the only active player to have reached the semifinals of all ten current WTA 1000 tournaments.
Chwalinska, ranked 22nd, reached the semifinals after defeating Maria Sakkari 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. The two athletes have a long history, having competed together in junior tournaments and even reaching the junior Australian Open doubles final in 2017.
In the other semifinal, Latvian Jelena Ostapenko will face British player Sonay Kartal. Ostapenko advanced after defeating Diana Shnaider 7-6 (6), 6-1, while Kartal secured her spot by upsetting fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Kartal’s run follows a significant comeback from a stress fracture in her back that sidelined her for six months earlier this year.
