iGaming industry adopts video game loot box mechanics

The iGaming industry is increasingly influenced by video game culture, specifically through the use of loot boxes. These randomized reward containers, common in major titles, utilize psychological loops similar to traditional gambling to maintain player engagement.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia’s Center for Gambling Research indicate that a significant majority of gamers—ranging from approximately two-thirds to the high 80s—already perceive loot boxes as a form of gambling. This crossover is driving a migration of younger players from gaming ecosystems toward iGaming platforms that utilize familiar, gamified interfaces for real-money wagering.
