Igbo community in Cross River decries illegal levies and urges state action
The Igbo community in Cross River State held an interactive session in Calabar with Ohanaeze Ndigbo leaders, businesspeople, women and students, and officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Participants alleged that unidentified groups, armed with receipt booklets, impose multiple illegal levies on traders daily, harassing businesses and threatening their survival. They claimed the groups enjoy protection from some government officials.
Community leaders, including Chief Agu Prince, High Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu and others, called on Governor Bassey Otu’s administration to clamp down on the illegal tax collectors, de‑congest markets to reduce fire risk, and improve the dilapidated road network, especially in the Northern Senatorial District, which they said hampers commercial activity. APC Chairman Christopher Etta said the concerns would be forwarded to the governor for consideration.
