IGK urges Chicago officials to reject Serbian suffering campaign
The Institute for Genocide Research Canada (IGK) has called on Chicago city officials to distance themselves from a multimedia campaign titled ‘Learn About Serbian Suffering’. The campaign, organized by the newly established Memorial Center of Republika Srpska, utilizes large digital LED screens on trucks traveling through major cities, including Chicago, New York, Vienna, and Rome.
In a letter to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and members of the City Council, the IGK warned that the campaign serves as a tool for political pressure, historical revisionism, and the relativization of facts established by international courts. The IGK stated that the campaign intentionally bypasses and suppresses the responsibility of convicted military, police, and political forces from Republika Srpska for mass crimes and genocide committed against non-Serb populations.
The IGK further noted that using the suffering of one community for political propaganda, without acknowledging established judicial rulings, constitutes a direct insult to other victims. This campaign coincides with reported pressures and police interrogations of employees at the Srebrenica Memorial Center in Potočari by authorities in Republika Srpska.
