Ignacio Buse advances to US Open second round

Peruvian tennis player Ignacio Buse has advanced to the second round of the 2026 US Open after defeating American Marcos Giron in a five-set marathon. The match, which lasted three hours and 48 minutes, was marked by rain delays and physical discomfort for Buse, who required medical assistance during the second set.

Buse, currently ranked 30th in the ATP, won the match with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(8), and 6-1. This victory makes him the third Peruvian player to win a main draw match at the US Open in the 21st century, following Luis Horna and Juan Pablo Varillas. The win also secures him a prize of US$190,000.

Buse is scheduled to face French player Benjamin Bonzi in the second round. Bonzi, ranked 97th, advanced to the round by defeating Alex Molcan 3-1. The two players previously met in the semifinals of the Winston-Salem Open, where Buse emerged victorious.
