Ignatius Ajuru University experiences gunfire during cult clash

Suspected members of rival cult groups, identified as the ‘Vikings’ and ‘Clansmen’ confraternities, engaged in a violent confrontation involving gunfire at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State on Monday. The clash occurred during the university’s Students’ Union Government activities in the Rumuolumeni area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

While no fatalities were reported, the violence caused significant disruption. Students were seen fleeing for safety in social media footage, and academic operations were temporarily halted as students sought shelter in classrooms and hostels to avoid stray bullets.

Rights advocates Charles Jaja and Prince Wiro criticized the incident, suggesting the university management has lost control of the campus. Jaja urged the implementation of intelligence-driven security and swift disciplinary actions, citing successful models used at other institutions. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed they responded to distress calls to restore order and stated that an investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
