Igor Dodon visits Moscow to advocate for energy ties with Russia
Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), has concluded a visit to Moscow where he met with representatives from the United Russia and A Just Russia parties. During the visit, Dodon advocated for the resumption of strategic dialogue with Moscow, emphasizing the potential for cheaper natural gas supplies for the Republic of Moldova.
Dodon made several claims regarding the regional security situation, suggesting that Moldova could be drawn into the war in Ukraine due to the alleged transit of weaponry through Moldovan territory. These assertions were criticized by Moldovan officials, including PAS deputy Andrian Cheptonar, who stated that such claims lack factual basis and that Moldova remains a constitutionally neutral state.
While Dodon noted that Russian counterparts expressed a willingness to negotiate more favorable energy prices, he did not provide specific details regarding contract conditions or concrete offers. Critics have pointed out that these claims regarding energy cooperation contradict the recent historical actions of Gazprom.
