Igor Rondoś loses controversial boxing match in Sofia
Polish boxer Igor Rondoś was eliminated from the European Boxing Championships in Sofia after a controversial 1/8 final match in the 85 kg category. Rondoś lost by a unanimous 5:0 decision to Russia's Dmitrij Karmanow.
The match drew significant criticism following an incident in the second round. After receiving several heavy blows, Rondoś was counted by the referee; however, reports indicate that Karmanow struck the Polish boxer while his hands were already on the ring mat. Despite the illegal blow, the referee failed to issue a warning or deduct points.
Commentator Piotr Jagiełło described the lack of referee intervention as a ‘skandal’, suggesting the move warranted at least a warning or immediate disqualification. The event has also faced scrutiny regarding the participation of Russian athletes, who were permitted to compete and display national symbols by the World Boxing organization.
